"How secure is YOUR Intellectual Property?"
The true value of any company is its intellectual property. These corporate gems are easy pickings for cyber thieves according to former U.S. Attorney Paul Coggins.
Coggins was regarded as one of the Justice Department's top legal authorities on cyber crime. He prosecuted two landmark cases in North Texas. First, Coggins won convictions against a group of hackers called the "Phone Masters." This band of hackers committed the deepest penetration of infrastructure in U.S. history including the White House telephone network. The hackers set themselves up as information brokers and sold personal data stolen from government and corporate data banks. They gained control of switches inside every telephone carrier in the nation, which meant they in effect "owned" the network.
Paul also prosecuted the nation's largest economic espionage case in which millions of dollars worth of trade secrets were stolen. A competitor bribed two employees to steal proprietary plans for oil field equipment. The stolen data was used to help Iraq rebuild its oil fields in violation of the embargo. |
